Hinge

Industrials

A hinge is a mechanical bearing that joins two solid objects and lets them turn relative to one another through a limited angle. An ideal hinge fixes a single axis of rotation and prevents every other translation or rotation, which gives it one degree of freedom. Hinges can be built from moving components or from flexible material. They are most familiar on pivoting doors, but they also appear on folding ladders, on automobile hoods and in many other flexible mechanisms, and even in large bridges. In living bodies many joints, such as the elbow, work as hinges.
