A gudgeon is a socket-like cylindrical fitting, the female half of a pivot, that is attached to one component so that it can pivot or hinge on a second component. The second component carries a pintle, the male counterpart, and the pair make a pivoting connection that is easy to separate. Hinges, shutters and boat rudders can use gudgeon and pintle connections. The word comes from the Middle English gojoun, from the Middle French goujon, which had the opposite sense of a dowel or pin, and it was first used in the 15th century.
