Charleston Chew is a candy bar of marshmallow-flavored nougat covered in a chocolate-flavored coating, created in 1922 by the Fox-Cross Candy Company, founded by stage actor Donley Cross and his associate Charlie Fox; its name comes from the Charleston, a popular dance of the era. Nathan Sloane bought the company in 1957 and changed the original formula, adding new flavors such as chocolate and strawberry in the 1970s; Nabisco bought the brand in 1980, Warner-Lambert in 1988, and Tootsie Roll Industries has owned Charleston Chew since 1993.
