Cannabis flower essential oil, also called hemp essential oil, is an essential oil made by steam distillation of the flowers, flower clusters, stems and upper leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. It is a different product from hemp seed oil, a vegetable oil cold-pressed from the seeds of low-THC hemp, and from hash oil, a THC-rich extract. The result is a pale yellow volatile liquid made mostly of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and other terpenoids, with minor compounds such as sulfur compounds, esters, indole and skatole shaping its aroma. Because cannabinoids hardly dissolve in water, it carries only traces of them. It can be made from both fibre-type and drug-type plants, and most of it is produced in Canada, with small-scale production in Switzerland and Germany. Buyers use it as a scent in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and candles and as a flavoring in candy and beverages.
