Archival Disc is a discontinued optical storage format jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic for long term data archiving rather than everyday consumer use. Sony and Panasonic announced their collaboration in July 2013 and formalized the standard in March 2014, releasing discs that held 300 gigabytes at first and later 500 gigabytes and a full terabyte. The discs were built to resist changes in temperature and humidity as well as dust and water, and were rated to remain readable for at least 50 years. It was aimed at professional users such as film studios archiving 4K footage and cloud data centers, and the format was discontinued in 2024.
