Soybean meal is a protein-rich ingredient produced as a byproduct of extracting oil from soybeans, with one bushel of soybeans, about sixty pounds, yielding around forty-eight pounds of meal. During processing it is heat-treated to neutralize natural compounds in raw soybeans that would otherwise interfere with digestion. About ninety-eight percent of the world's soybean meal is used as livestock feed, making it one of the most economically important byproducts of the soybean-processing industry, with the remainder used in human food products.
