In 1982 the consumer health company Johnson & Johnson faced a crisis after several people in the Chicago area died from taking Tylenol capsules that had been tampered with and laced with cyanide after leaving the factory. The company's rapid nationwide recall of Tylenol products and its introduction of tamper evident packaging afterward became a widely cited example of crisis management in business education.
