VUCA is an acronym describing the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of general conditions and situations, drawing on the leadership theories of Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus. The U.S. Army War College introduced the concept in 1987 to describe the more complex multilateral world it saw emerging after the end of the Cold War, and more frequent use of the term began after 2002 as it spread into strategic leadership discussion in organizations ranging from for profit corporations to education.
