Tea is an aromatic beverage made by infusing hot or boiling water with the leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia, and after plain drinking water it is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world. Global production reached 29.8 million tonnes in 2022, with China alone supplying 14.53 million tonnes, about 49 percent of the total, and India a further 5.97 million tonnes, about 20 percent. China, India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka together account for roughly 81 percent of world production, with secondary output from Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Argentina, and Uganda, and small specialty cultivation as far afield as Portugal's Sao Miguel Island and Georgia's Guria region. Cultivation is concentrated overwhelmingly in Asia and Africa, with only limited production in South America and around the Black and Caspian Seas.
