The plastics industry manufactures polymer materials, commonly called plastics, and provides plastics related services to a wide range of other industries including packaging, building and construction, electronics, aerospace, manufacturing and transportation. It sits within the chemical industry, and because mineral oil is the major constituent of most plastics, it also forms part of the petrochemical industry. Beyond raw plastics production, plastics engineering, working mostly with engineering plastics valued for their mechanical and thermal properties over more common commodity plastics, is a significant part of the industrial sector in its own right.
