The pipeline transport industry moves liquids and gases over long distances through networks of pipes to market areas for consumption. Oil and natural gas are the dominant cargoes, though pipelines also carry water, ammonia and, in some regional systems, even beer and milk. The industry spans pipeline construction and operation, pumping and compression technology, safety and environmental regulation, and geopolitics, since major pipeline routes often cross national borders and can become instruments of energy diplomacy.
