The online dating industry is made up of companies that promote and provide mechanisms, generally dedicated websites or applications, for people to search for and interact with potential romantic or sexual partners over the internet. Its businesses use a mix of revenue models: some are free and depend on advertising, others use freemium plans with optional paid features, and some rely entirely on paid subscriptions. In the United States online dating services generated about 957 million dollars in revenue in 2008, and by November 2023 the two companies that dominate the market, Match Group and Bumble, had together lost about 40 billion dollars in combined market value since 2021, a decline linked to market saturation and low consumer satisfaction.
