Oilfield services is the sector of the petroleum industry made up of companies that supply equipment, technology and specialized labor to oil and gas exploration and production operators, rather than producing petroleum themselves. Oilfield service companies build, maintain and operate the drilling rigs used to extract crude oil and natural gas, and provide well construction, well completion and production support alongside subsurface data and geological evaluation services. The sector spans both onshore, land based operations and offshore, marine based operations, and includes large, diversified, technology focused providers such as Schlumberger and Halliburton alongside smaller contractors that specialize in a single service line such as rig operation or downhole equipment.
