Long-Term Care Industry

The long term care industry runs nursing homes, also called care homes, skilled nursing facilities or rest homes, which provide residential care for older people, senior citizens and disabled people. Nearly 6 percent of older adults live in residential facilities providing this kind of care, and in the United States nearly 1 in 10 residents aged 75 to 84 stay in a nursing home for five years or more, while nearly 3 in 10 in that age group stay less than 100 days. A large portion of Medicare and Medicaid spending each year goes toward covering nursing home care, underscoring the industry reliance on public funding.
