Communication Services

The global industry built around the internet, the worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite to communicate between networks and devices, including internet service providers and the businesses that operate on top of that infrastructure. Commercial internet service providers first emerged in 1989 in the United States and Australia, and the linking of commercial networks and enterprises in the early 1990s marked the shift toward the modern, commercially driven internet. Business to business transactions and financial services conducted over the internet now affect supply chains across entire industries, and online shopping has grown into a significant market in its own right, a growth commentators often attribute to the internet's decentralized, centrally unadministered structure, which allows it to expand organically.

FAQs

How do people and businesses connect to the internet?

Through internet service providers, increasingly over mobile broadband and Wi-Fi.

People and businesses reach the internet through internet service providers. The internet is a network of networks that links computers all over the world, and an internet service provider gives a customer access to it. In the twenty-first century, mobile broadband and Wi-Fi have allowed that connection to be wireless. This is why internet service providers sit inside the internet industry alongside the businesses that operate on top of the infrastructure.

Who is credited with inventing the internet?

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn, who developed TCP/IP.

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn are often credited with inventing the internet. They developed the transmission control protocol and internet protocol, known together as TCP/IP, which the internet uses to communicate between networks. Their work followed the ARPANET, an early prototype of the internet. The commercial industry described on this page grew later, once commercial internet service providers emerged in 1989 and commercial networks linked up in the early 1990s.
