The industry engaged in building houses, apartment buildings and similar residential structures, generally called home construction, housing construction or residential construction. Four trades dominate the sector, carpenters, masons, electricians and plumbers, among many others, and its output is tracked through housing starts, a measure of distinct housing units rather than distinct construction projects. Global demand remains far from met; the United Nations has projected a need for 96,000 new dwelling units to be built every day to meet housing demand worldwide.
