The dietary supplement industry manufactures products, in the form of pills, capsules, tablets, powders or liquids, intended to supplement a person's diet with nutrients drawn from food or synthesized versions of them, including vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids and amino acids. The market is large: it was valued at about 140.3 billion dollars in the United States in 2020, rose to an estimated 151.9 billion dollars in 2021, and is projected to reach 196.6 billion dollars globally by 2028. About 60 percent of American adults use dietary supplements, rising to 74 percent among those over 60, with multivitamins the most commonly used type, and growth is driven by manufacturing advances, rising demand for health marketed products and an aging population.
