Copper extraction is the multi-stage process of obtaining copper from its ores, carried out through a series of physical, chemical, and electrochemical processes that vary depending on the ore source and local environmental regulation. The industry's largest smelting capacity lies in China, Chile, India, Germany, Japan, Peru, and Russia, and as of 2023 China alone held more than half of the world's smelting capacity and stood as the world's largest consumer of refined copper, followed by Japan at about 8 percent of global cathode production and Russia at about 5 percent, with Poland and Bulgaria each contributing 3 to 4 percent. Refining copper also yields valuable byproducts, chiefly precious metals and sulfuric acid, adding to the industry's economic importance beyond copper itself. The industry increasingly contends with rising arsenic content in copper concentrates, a consequence of shallow, low-arsenic copper deposits being progressively depleted over time.
