The global industry built around asset management, the systematic governance and realization of value from the tangible and intangible assets an organization is responsible for, including physical infrastructure, equipment and buildings as well as intellectual property and financial instruments. The discipline covers developing, operating, maintaining, upgrading and disposing of assets as cost effectively as possible, and spans financial services such as investment portfolio and pension fund management, infrastructure and utility maintenance, engineering optimization of complex physical assets, and enterprise and software systems for tracking assets. The field is significant enough across developed economies to have its own international standards, the ISO 55000 series, and its own professional bodies such as the Institute of Asset Management and the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management.
