Aquaculture, also called aquafarming, is the controlled cultivation of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae and other aquatic plants and animals of commercial value. As an industry it produced 130.9 million tonnes of output valued at 312.8 billion US dollars, with China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and Bangladesh together accounting for 82 percent of total 2024 production. It is a distinct branch of the global food economy from wild catch fishing, supplying a growing share of the fish and shellfish consumed worldwide.
