Pipeline Transport Industry

Energy

The pipeline transport industry moves liquids and gases over long distances through networks of pipes to market areas for consumption. Oil and natural gas are the dominant cargoes, though pipelines also carry water, ammonia and, in some regional systems, even beer and milk. The industry spans pipeline construction and operation, pumping and compression technology, safety and environmental regulation, and geopolitics, since major pipeline routes often cross national borders and can become instruments of energy diplomacy.

FAQs

How does natural gas get from the well to a customer by pipeline?

Gathering lines, processing plants, high-pressure transmission lines and local distribution lines, in that order.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the journey has four main stages. Gathering systems of small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines move raw natural gas from the wellhead to a processing plant or to a larger mainline pipeline. Processing plants separate hydrocarbon gas liquids, nonhydrocarbon gases and water before the gas enters a mainline transmission system. Wide-diameter, high-pressure transmission pipelines carry the gas to storage facilities and distribution centers, with compressor stations keeping it moving forward. Local distribution companies then deliver it to consumers through small-diameter, lower-pressure service lines.
