Online Dating Industry

Communication Services

The online dating industry is made up of companies that promote and provide mechanisms, generally dedicated websites or applications, for people to search for and interact with potential romantic or sexual partners over the internet. Its businesses use a mix of revenue models: some are free and depend on advertising, others use freemium plans with optional paid features, and some rely entirely on paid subscriptions. In the United States online dating services generated about 957 million dollars in revenue in 2008, and by November 2023 the two companies that dominate the market, Match Group and Bumble, had together lost about 40 billion dollars in combined market value since 2021, a decline linked to market saturation and low consumer satisfaction. FAQs

How does a person use an online dating service?

A member builds a profile and uses other members' profiles to decide whom to contact.

A person becomes a member by creating a profile with personal information such as age, gender, sexual orientation, location and appearance, and most services encourage adding photos or videos. Members can then view the profiles of other members and use the visible information to decide whether to start contact. Most services offer digital messaging, and some add online chat, telephone chat or message boards. Members can keep their interactions online or arrange to meet in person.
