Materials

Leather is a strong, flexible and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay, primarily sourced from cattle, sheep, goats, horses, buffalo, pigs, ostriches and aquatic animals. Leatherworking is an ancient craft practiced for over seven thousand years, and today China and India are the world leading producers of leather goods, anchoring a global commercial industry built around this material. FAQs

How is leather tanned, and which method is most common today?

Vegetable tanning is the oldest method, and chrome tanning is the most common one in modern use.

Tanning processes differ mainly in which chemicals go into the tanning liquor. Vegetable tanning uses tannins extracted from vegetable matter such as tree bark, and it is the oldest known method. Chrome tanning uses chromium sulfate and other chromium salts, takes about a day and is the most common method in modern use, which suits large-scale industrial production. Its environmental concern is that chromium is a heavy metal and some byproducts can contain toxic forms. Aldehyde tanning, which uses glutaraldehyde or oxazolidine compounds, is the main chrome-free alternative.
