Hydroelectric Power Industry

Utilities

Hydroelectricity, or hydroelectric power, is electricity generated from hydropower. Hydropower supplied about 15 percent of the world electricity, almost 4,210 terawatt-hours, in 2023, an amount that surpasses the combined output of all other renewable energy sources as well as global nuclear power generation, anchoring hydroelectric power as one of the largest utility industry segments worldwide. FAQs

Can hydroelectric power also store energy for later use?

Yes. Pumped storage hydropower stores energy by moving water between two reservoirs and acts like a giant battery.

Yes. A form of the technology called pumped storage hydropower works as a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It uses two water reservoirs at different elevations. Power is generated when water moves down from the upper reservoir to the lower one through a turbine, and the system uses power to pump water back up into the upper reservoir. Because it can store power and release it when needed, pumped storage acts much like a giant battery for the electricity grid.
