The industry engaged in building houses, apartment buildings and similar residential structures, generally called home construction, housing construction or residential construction. Four trades dominate the sector, carpenters, masons, electricians and plumbers, among many others, and its output is tracked through housing starts, a measure of distinct housing units rather than distinct construction projects. Global demand remains far from met; the United Nations has projected a need for 96,000 new dwelling units to be built every day to meet housing demand worldwide.

What steps does building a home usually involve?
It usually runs from planning and site clearing through foundations, framing or walls, and then plumbing and wiring.
Home construction often starts with a planning stage, in which an architect prepares plans that the client and any regulatory authority approve, and land may need to be acquired. The site is then cleared, foundations are laid, and trenches for connections to services such as sewerage, water and electricity are established. A wooden-framed house gets a framework to support the boards, siding and roof, while a brick house has courses of bricks laid to form its walls. Floors, beams and internal walls are built as the structure develops, with plumbing and wiring for water and electricity installed as appropriate.
