John Clifton Bogle, known as Jack Bogle (1929-2019), was an American investor, business executive and philanthropist who founded the mutual fund company The Vanguard Group and is credited with popularizing the index fund as a mainstream investment vehicle. He argued for long term investing over speculation and for keeping investment costs and broker fees as low as possible, and his 1999 book Common Sense on Mutual Funds: New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor became a bestseller regarded as a classic in the investment field.
