Calisto Tanzi (17 November 1938 to 1 January 2022) was an Italian businessman who founded the dairy and food company Parmalat in 1961. Parmalat collapsed in 2003 with a deficit of roughly 14 billion euros, described as Europe's biggest bankruptcy at the time, and Tanzi was convicted of embezzling approximately 800 million euros from the company, serving more than two years in prison before being placed under house arrest. Authorities also seized an art collection of his worth more than 100 million euros, including works by Picasso, Monet and van Gogh.
