Marc Andreessen

Founder and Executive

Marc Andreessen is an American businessman, venture capitalist and former software engineer. While working as a programmer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, he and Eric Bina built the Mosaic web browser, released in 1993, which was the first browser widely used on both Windows and Mac. Andreessen then moved to California and, together with Jim Clark, started Mosaic Communications Corporation, renamed Netscape Communications, whose Netscape Navigator was the first successful commercial web browser. The company's 1995 public offering made him a public figure, and AOL bought Netscape in 1999 for 4.3 billion dollars. He later founded Loudcloud with Ben Horowitz and others, renamed Opsware and sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2007, co-founded the social network platform Ning, and co-founded the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, where he is a general partner.
