Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller (1913 to 2012) was a Danish shipping magnate and a longtime leader of the A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group, the conglomerate founded by his father, Arnold Peter Møller. Born in Hellerup to a Danish father and an American mother, he became a partner in the family firm in 1940 and ran it from New York during the German occupation of Denmark until he returned in 1947. He became chief executive and chairman when his father died in 1965, stepped down as chief executive in 1993 in favor of Jess Søderberg, and stayed on as chairman until he retired completely in 2003 at age 90. In 1970 he became the first non-American member of the board of IBM. He kept a controlling interest in the group largely through family foundations, which also funded projects such as the Copenhagen Opera House. Reports of his personal wealth differ between sources.
