Boris Berezovsky (23 January 1946 to 23 March 2013) was a Russian businessman, engineer and mathematician who became one of the country's most prominent oligarchs during its 1990s privatization era, amassing an estimated 3 billion dollars in wealth. He gained control of the television network Channel One and helped Roman Abramovich acquire the oil company Sibneft, while also funding Boris Yeltsin's 1996 re-election campaign and backing the political rise of Vladimir Putin. After Putin consolidated power, Berezovsky became a leading opposition figure, emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2000, and was granted political asylum there in 2003. He had lost most of his fortune to legal battles, including a major High Court case against Abramovich, by the time he was found dead in England in 2013, a death a coroner recorded as an open verdict.
