Seymour Roger Cray, who lived from September 28, 1925 to October 5, 1996, was an American electrical engineer, computer scientist, mathematician and supercomputer architect. He designed a series of computers that were the fastest in the world for decades and founded Cray Research, which built many of them in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he was born and raised. Called the father of supercomputing and credited with creating the supercomputer industry, he was described by Larry Smarr of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications as the Thomas Edison of the supercomputing industry.
