Robin Li, whose Chinese name is Li Yanhong, is a Chinese software engineer and internet entrepreneur born on 17 November 1968 in Yangquan, Shanxi Province. He studied information management at Peking University and computer science at the University at Buffalo, leaving the doctoral program there with a master's degree in 1994. While working at IDD Information Services in 1996 he created the Rankdex site-scoring algorithm for ranking search results, work that a later Google patent for PageRank referenced. After a period as a staff engineer at Infoseek, he founded the search company Baidu in January 2000 with Eric Xu, and he has served as its chief executive officer since 2004. Baidu listed on NASDAQ on 5 August 2005 and grew into the largest Chinese search engine. His tenure has also drawn criticism over advertising practices on the platform, including the death of Wei Zexi.
