Richard Bolt

Founder and Executive

Richard Henry Bolt (April 22, 1911 to January 13, 2002) was an American physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an interest in acoustics. Born in Peking, China, where his parents were medical missionaries, he returned to the United States with his family in 1916 and settled in California. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1928 and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1933, combining his interests in music, design and architecture with acoustics. He was one of the founders of the company Bolt, Beranek and Newman, which built the ARPANET, a forerunner of the Internet.
