William L. "Red" Whittaker, born in 1948, is an American roboticist and research professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is the Fredkin Research Professor, director of the Field Robotics Center and chief scientist of the Robotics Engineering Consortium. He led Tartan Racing to first place in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. He founded and led Carnegie Mellon’s team in the Google Lunar X Prize from 2007 until the prize closed in 2018, and he continues lunar work through NASA contracts such as MoonRanger, a small rover designed to explore the Moon quickly and autonomously. He recruited John Thornton to Astrobotic Technology.
