H. Wayne Huizenga was an American entrepreneur described in the AutoNation company history as one of the best-known in the United States for creating two mammoth companies, Waste Management and Blockbuster Video. In 1995 he and a partner began a new venture by buying Republic Industries, a waste-disposal company, which he set out to build into a group with interests in security, rubbish collection and used-car superstores. Republic bought Alamo and National Car Rental, and Huizenga merged his AutoNation used-car superstore chain into Republic in April 1996. Republic spun off its waste business as Republic Services in 1997 and in 1998 renamed itself AutoNation, Inc. The company founder and its co-chief executives stepped down in 1999 when profits drooped.
