Eric Broadley was a British entrepreneur and engineer, born in 1928, who founded Lola Cars and served as its chief designer, and he is regarded as one of the most influential racing car designers of the post-war period. He trained as a quantity surveyor and raced in his spare time with the 750 Motor Club, building his first car, the Broadley Special, in 1956. His next design, with a space frame chassis, became the Lola Mk1, which beat Lotus cars in club racing and launched the company in 1958. Lola went on to take part in Formula One, Indy car and sports car racing, and Broadley sold the firm to Martin Birrane in 1997. He died in 2017.
