Elbert Leander "Burt" Rutan, born in 1943, is an American retired aerospace engineer and entrepreneur noted for light, strong, unusual-looking and energy-efficient aircraft and spacecraft. He designed the Voyager, which in 1986 was the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refueling, and the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, which set a record for the longest nonstop circumnavigation in 2006. His suborbital spaceplane SpaceShipOne became the first privately funded spacecraft to reach space in 2004 and won the Ansari X Prize. He founded or co-founded several aerospace companies, including the Rutan Aircraft Factory, Scaled Composites, Mojave Aerospace Ventures and The Spaceship Company.
