Donald Wills Douglas Sr. lived from 1892 to 1981 and was an American aircraft industrialist and engineer. An aviation pioneer, he designed and built the Douglas Cloudster, which failed in its goal of flying non-stop across the United States but became the first airplane to carry a payload greater than its own weight. He founded the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1921, and under his leadership it became one of the leaders of the commercial aircraft industry, notably with the Douglas DC-3 airliner and its military transport version, the C-47. Douglas lagged in the jet age and retired in 1957; his company later merged with McDonnell Aircraft.
