Charles Richard Fairey

Founder and Executive

Sir Charles Richard Fairey (5 May 1887 to 30 September 1956), also known as Richard Fairey, was an English aircraft manufacturer. He was born in Hendon, Middlesex, educated at the Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood, and Ardingly College, and studied at Finsbury Technical College. After his father died when he was 11 he took a job at 15 with the Jandus Electric Company of London, and he became a skilled designer and builder of model aeroplanes, winning first prize at a model flying competition at Crystal Palace on 4 June 1910. In 1911 he became general manager of the Blair Atholl Syndicate Ltd., formed to develop the tailless aircraft designed by J. W. Dunne, in 1913 he joined Short Brothers as chief engineer, and in 1915 he formed his own company.
