Michael Ashton Kuhn, born on 7 May 1949 in Nairobi, Kenya, is an English film producer based mainly in England. He travelled to England at age 13 to study at Dover College and then read law at Clare College, Cambridge. He joined PolyGram in 1975 and in 1991 set up its subsidiary PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, which grew into a European rival to the Hollywood studios. In 1999, when PolyGram merged with Universal Music Group, he went independent and formed the production company Qwerty Films, whose films include Being John Malkovich, Kinsey and Florence Foster Jenkins. His memoir 100 Films and a Funeral appeared in 2001 and was later turned into a documentary about the rise and fall of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. He became Chair of the National Film and Television School in 2002 and was made a CBE in 2021 for services to the film industry.
