In September 2015 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that Volkswagen had installed defeat device software in millions of diesel vehicles worldwide to cheat official emissions tests, causing the cars to emit up to 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide under real-world driving conditions. The scandal, nicknamed Dieselgate, led to the resignation of CEO Martin Winterkorn, roughly 11 million affected vehicles worldwide, tens of billions of dollars in fines, buybacks and settlements, and criminal charges against several Volkswagen executives.
