Tata Motors, part of India's Tata Group under chairman Ratan Tata, completed its 2.3 billion dollar acquisition of Ford's Jaguar and Land Rover luxury car brands in June 2008, just months before the global financial crisis put severe strain on the newly combined business. Jaguar Land Rover went on to become a major profit driver for Tata Motors within a few years, marking one of the most prominent instances of an Indian company acquiring a storied Western luxury brand.
