A major security breach of Sony's PlayStation Network in April 2011 exposed the personal information, including names, addresses and possibly credit card data, of roughly 77 million user accounts, forcing Sony to shut the online gaming service down for about a month. It was one of the largest data breaches in history at the time, costing Sony an estimated 170 million dollars and prompting government inquiries in multiple countries into the company's data security practices.
