In 2011 Motorola split into two independent publicly traded companies, Motorola Mobility, which made mobile phones and related devices, and Motorola Solutions, which made communications equipment for government, public safety and enterprise customers. Motorola Mobility was acquired by Google the following year and was later sold on to Lenovo in 2014, while Motorola Solutions continued as an independent company.

Motorola Mobility was formed on January 4, 2011 after a split of the original Motorola Inc., founded in 1928, into two separate companies, with Motorola Mobility assuming the company's consumer-oriented product lines, including its mobile phone business, as well as its cable modems and pay television set-top boxes, while the enterprise and radio communication division continues as Motorola Solutions, a legal successor of the original company.
