In 2014 Facebook acquired the mobile messaging service WhatsApp for approximately 19 billion dollars in cash and stock, one of the largest acquisitions of a technology startup on record at the time. The deal extended Facebook's reach into markets where WhatsApp had already become the dominant messaging platform, and WhatsApp continued to operate as a largely separate service under Facebook's ownership in the years immediately after the deal.
