De Beers is a British multinational diamond company specializing in the mining, trading and marketing of diamonds, with operations in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada. Founded in 1888 by the British businessman Cecil Rhodes with financing from Alfred Beit and the Rothschild banking house, it controlled the large majority of the world's rough diamond distribution for most of the twentieth century, a dominance later consolidated under Ernest Oppenheimer, though its share of world supply has since fallen substantially.

FAQs
Where does the name De Beers come from?
It comes from the de Beer brothers who owned the farm where diamonds were found.
The name comes from two Afrikaner brothers, Diederik Arnoldus de Beer and Johannes Nicolaas de Beer, who owned a farm named Vooruitzicht in the Orange Free State. Diamonds were found on their land and they sold the farm in 1871. Their surname was given to one of the mines there and then became associated with the company.
