Two crashes of the Boeing 737 MAX, Lion Air Flight 610 in October 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in March 2019, killed 346 people combined and were traced to a flawed automated flight-control system (MCAS) that repeatedly pushed the aircraft's nose down based on faulty sensor data. Regulators worldwide grounded the entire 737 MAX fleet for nearly two years, and subsequent investigations exposed failures in Boeing's internal safety culture and the FAA's certification oversight, costing Boeing more than 20 billion dollars and severely damaging its reputation.
