In January 2000, America Online announced an agreement to acquire Time Warner, uniting AOL's internet reach with Time Warner's media and entertainment holdings. The deal closed in January 2001, forming AOL Time Warner. The combination is now widely regarded as one of the worst business deals in corporate history, and the company reverted to the Time Warner name in 2003 after AOL's division suffered massive losses.
