Xcel Energy Inc. is an American investor-owned electric and natural gas utility holding company headquartered in Minneapolis, formed in 2000 through the merger of Northern States Power Company and New Century Energies, which took the new Xcel Energy name for the combined company. It provides electricity and natural gas service across eight states in the upper Midwest and West, including Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan and Texas, and has been an early utility-industry adopter of large-scale wind power.
