PG&E Corporation is an American energy holding company headquartered in Oakland, California, and the parent of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, an electric and natural gas utility formed in 1905 whose lineage traces to San Francisco Gas Company, founded in 1852. It provides electricity and natural gas to much of Northern and Central California, and it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection twice, in 2001 and again in 2019, the second time under the weight of massive liabilities from wildfires its equipment had been found to cause.
